Last weekend, we escaped with some Southwest points to St. Simons Island for a weekend getaway with our sweet friends, Anna and Ryan, who drove down from Richmond, Virginia to meet us at their grandpa’s second home.

Here are the highlights of our time on the island:

— Driving from the airport to the house at midnight in our go cart (masquerading as a rental car) listening to the Serial podcast to stay awake. We haven’t finished it yet, but guys, something is creepy/off/weird with Mr. S.

— Shopping at THE Winn-Dixie for groceries. Because it’s not just Winn-Dixie (or Wal-Mart) in the South. Get it right, Amy and Jordan! West-Coasters! In all seriousness, though, whenever we can stay in a house or AirBnb (instead of a hotel) and cook in most of the time, we’re game — because a penny saved is a penny earned! We usually stick to the 2/3 in and 1/3 out rule. Our bellies and our bank accounts always thank us for that!

— Speaking of which, the restaurants Ryan chose were ON POINT.

Let’s start with Iguana’s (featured in the Snapchat story below) not just because it had parrots hanging from the walls and reminded us of this classic Full House episode; but because it’s where Jordan, on night one, simultaneously gave up on his New Year’s diet and rekindled his love for cheesy grits for the first time since Charleston.

On a related note, if you want some good, warm, comfort food, you MUST try Barbara Jean’s — not to be confused with Billie Jean’s — because everything (and we mean everything) is cooked in butter. And it’s glorious. Plus, our server was the sweetest Southern thing you’ve ever talked with. It was lovely.

— Back to go carts… Ryan’s grandpa actually owns one (well, a golf cart) so one afternoon we cruised like gangsters at 15mph to an almost abandoned beach (because winter) and made a picnic. It felt like we were sitting in the middle of a Nicholas Sparks novel. Title: Settled in St. Simons.

— Speaking of settling things, we played Settlers of Catan for the first time… and then we played 3-4 games per day after that. Because we got addicted. How did we not know about this sooner?! Jordan was the only person who didn’t win all weekend, but he comes in first place for a new category: Terrorist/Hostage Negotiator. Within one game, instead of trading one thing he needed for one thing someone else needed (like a normal person), he’d figure out what someone really needed, and then say, “You need a sheep? Cool! I need wheat!” Then as he’d extend his “sheep” card, he’d say, “THREE wheat, or no deal. Five… four… three… two…”

The first time, Amy got so flustered she yelled out, “Fine! Okay! Here!”

The next time, she smiled, looked at Jordan, and said, “I don’t negotiate with terrorists.”

— In-between games of Settlers each night, we’d settle down (see what we did there) in the living room for a group devotional. We picked one chapter of the New Testament, took turns reading it out loud, and then spent an hour discussing it. Our favorite was the day we visited Driftwood Beach, a shoreline with hundreds of uprooted trees and exposed roots.

That night, we randomly chose to read Paul’s letter to the Colossians and this line stood out like a sore thumb: So then, just as you received Christ Jesus as Lord, continue to live your lives in him, rooted and built up in him, strengthened in the faith as you were taught, and overflowing with thankfulness. It was almost too perfect, because it was.

— Side note: if you haven’t seen the anniversary mini-session we did for Anna and Ryan under the Spanish moss and on Driftwood Beach, stop whatever you’re doing right now and go check it out. It’s one of our all-time favorites!

Here are some pics of our picnic!

Yes, we ate ALL the bread.

This selfie is 100% Akins and %50 Demos.

This one is better.

Jordan’s Great Aunt (nickname: The Non, like THE Winn-Dixie) got us in to a famous hotel on Sea Island called The Cloister. And it looks like a palace. We enjoyed pretending to be rich and famous. Next time, we’ll bring gold teeth just in case someone asks for our room number.

Not that she NEEDS an introduction (because you all probably know her), but the woman in the blue jacket is THE Non.

Love our sweet Great Aunts! It was so special to see them. Love you, Aunt Nancy and Aunt Suzy!!

We also go to explore The Cloisters, and the sights were so beautiful, we audibly gasped around every corner.

Barbara Jean’s!

BTS of the Spanish Moss…

…and Driftwood Beach! You can see a little sneak peek into the shenanigans in the Snapchat video below, and then see the final product here!
