We almost made a big mistake.
At the beginning of the year, we almost closed our calendar.
It was January, and with 20 spring weddings on the horizon and more teaching and traveling than we’d ever packed into a single six-month period staring us in the face, we almost decided not to meet with any more couples.
Then Krystle and Dan emailed us, and we knew we had to make room for just one more, because these two are the salt the earth is made of.
From the second we sat down for coffee, we laughed. A lot. They’re both some of the funniest people we’ve ever met. They have the sincerest hearts, too. They’re just so likeable, you know? It feels easy around them. So much fun. And when she shared her vision for a hot air balloon engagement session (which turned out to be one of our favorite shots of all time!) and a wedding in the cool pine forest during Phoenix’s hot summer, we were all in!
But the laughs or their thoughtfulness didn’t end at coffee that first night or at their engagement session a few weeks later. Krystle knew that we had a wedding on Saturday and would be driving a few hours at night, through the winding mountains, arriving after midnight, and shooting the next afternoon, so she even checked in with us Saturday night with a text that said, “Drive safe! We can’t wait for tomorrow!” How cool is it that the night before HER wedding, she was thinking about US?! That just shows what a servant’s heart she and Dan have.
And when we arrived on Sunday morning, she hugged us and said, “Wait! Before you start working, I’ve got something for YOU!”
“Something for US?!” we exclaimed.
She handed us a bag in our branding colors. We pulled back the tissue paper and couldn’t believe our eyes. You guys, this was one of the most thoughtful gifts. There were two mugs with the Luke’s Diner logo on them. WE. WERE. SO. EXCITED! As many of you know, our favorite show of all time is The Gilmore Girls, and Luke’s Diner is the most famous place on the show, like the bar in Cheers or The Max from Saved By The Bell. We told Krystle that we didn’t even know mugs like that existed! Because, you know, there is actually no such thing as Luke’s Diner! She told us that she’d done some digging online to find them. The fact that she even a) got us a gift, b) got such a thoughtful, personal one, and c) spent so much time searching for it made us feel so special we can’t even describe it. God amazes us with the brides and grooms He continues to enrich our life with.
Aside from Krystle’s BHLDN dress (which is pronounced bee-holden for anyone else who also used to say it like an acronym!) and her grand-slam dessert choices of sea salt chocolate chip cookies from Le Grande Orange and cupcakes from Nothing Bundt Cakes (two of our favorite spots in town!), what we loved about this wedding so much was the love that existed not just between the bride and groom, but their love for God and their family’s love for them. All three were on full display and it was a very touching and beautiful thing.
Krystle and Dan, we’re so thankful you emailed us when you did, because we couldn’t have imagined capping off the craziest season of our career with anyone else but you two. Your joy and happiness helped us sprint through the finish line, tear the white tape, give everything we had when it should’ve felt like we had nothing left, feel as proud about spring wedding twenty-two as we do about this season’s wedding one, and end on the highest of highs.
Here are a few highlights from our time together. We’ll admit, we weren’t sure we could top the epicness of your hot air balloon engagement session, but we’re not sure we needed to. We just need to complement them. To complete the story. Because those photos represent your relationship lifting off, and these ones serve a different purpose.
They show you on top of the world.
Enjoy, friends. We sure did.
